Hocker: 2005–2020 Landscapes is the first monograph to present the work of the Texas-based, internationally recognized, and award-winning landscape architecture studio.
Founded in 2005 by David Hocker, the firm has distinguished itself through projects that are underpinned by an exceptional understanding of hardscape and horticulture, thoughtfully address environmental context, creatively integrate sustainable materials, and sensitively mediate between the built and natural worlds. Equipped with the knowledge necessary to confront complex environmental and programmatic challenges, Hocker approaches each project with the ambition of creating spaces that are simple and restrained, beautiful and engaging, all while cultivating a strikingly contemporary aesthetic.

Reflecting the breadth of the studio’s work, the fifteen projects in Hocker: 2005–2020 Landscapes represent a range of typologies, from stunning residential landscapes to urban parks in locales throughout Texas, on California’s Sonoma Mountain, and in Lyme, New Hampshire. Among them are a weekend retreat north of San Francisco (winner of the 2019 ASLA Award of Excellence), a former power station-turned-contemporary art center (winner of a 2016 ASLA Honor Award), the revitalized Dallas Museum of Art (winner of a 2017 ASLA Texas Chapter Merit Award), a historic synagogue, and a Cistercian abbey and preparatory school.

With nearly 200 captivating photographs, detailed site plans, engaging text, and meditations on Hocker’s approach to material, texture, structure, craft, and layering, this new book offers insight into the elements that make up extraordinary landscapes

WINNER OF ASLA’S 2015 AWARD OF EXCELLENCE

Cedar Creek, a project that weaves several structures discreetly into a wooded 7-acre site at Cedar Creek Lake, has been recognized with an Award of Excellence by the 2015 American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) Professional Awards jury in the Residential Design category.

This top award acknowledges the collaborative effort between the design team and client that transformed a long-held family property into a legacy weekend destination. The harmony between built structure, site, materiality, and mature trees provides the allure of established existence.
